Folkerton Mill Featured in Tie the Knot Scotland: Penny Shares Her Favourite Things
When you spend every weekend helping couples celebrate one of the biggest days of their lives, people often ask what your favourite part of a wedding is.
The truth?
It's almost impossible to choose.
So I was delighted when Tie the Knot Scotland invited me to be part of their "My Favourite Things" feature, sharing a little insight into what makes weddings at Folkerton Mill so special.
After years of restoring our historic mill and welcoming hundreds of couples through our doors, I've realised that it isn't the trends or the styling that stay with me.
It's the moments.

People often expect me to choose a particular location around the venue.
The gardens.
The waterwheel.
The Hay Barn.
The Old Mill.
While I love every corner of Folkerton Mill, my favourite wedding photograph isn't about where it was taken.
It's when it was taken. The confetti moment happens just seconds after the ceremony. It's one of the very first moments couples experience as newlyweds, and it's completely impossible to fake. The excitement, relief, laughter and emotion are written all over their faces. Family and friends are cheering, confetti is flying through the air, and for just a few seconds, nothing else matters. Every single wedding is different, but that feeling is always the same.
My favourite ceremony location
If I had to choose one place at Folkerton Mill, it would be our riverside ceremony garden. Nestled beside the burn, with our historic waterwheel providing the backdrop, it's a peaceful space that feels completely immersed in nature. One of my favourite details is the pair of Silver Birch and Rowan trees that frame the ceremony space. In Celtic tradition, Rowan trees symbolise protection, while Silver Birch represents new beginnings, making them a rather fitting place for two people starting married life together. It's a quiet detail that many guests don't notice, but one that means a great deal to us.
The biggest wedding trend? Authenticity.
One of the questions Tie the Knot asked me was about wedding trends. Interestingly, I don't think the biggest trend is a colour palette, a style of dress or a type of entertainment. Instead, I'm seeing couples move away from planning weddings that look impressive on social media and towards creating celebrations that genuinely reflect who they are. They're choosing meaningful ceremonies. Relaxed wedding weekends. Shared feasts. Personal vows. Unique entertainment. Time with the people they love. The focus has shifted from creating the "perfect wedding" to creating the right wedding. And honestly, I couldn't be happier about that.
Why this feature means so much
Being featured in Tie the Knot Scotland is always an honour, but what I'm most grateful for is the opportunity to share the values that sit at the heart of Folkerton Mill. Since the very beginning, Scott and I have wanted to create more than just a beautiful venue. We've wanted to create a place where couples feel completely comfortable being themselves. A place where families come together. Where traditions can be embraced, reinvented or left behind altogether. Where sustainability, inclusivity and genuine hospitality aren't just words on a website but part of every wedding we host. Seeing those values recognised in a publication like Tie the Knot Scotland makes us incredibly proud.
Looking ahead
As we continue welcoming couples from across Scotland and beyond, one thing remains unchanged. Our favourite weddings are never defined by how much they cost or how elaborate they are. They're remembered because of how they made people feel. Laughter around the fire pits. Quiet moments in the farmhouse. Tears during the ceremony (usually mine!). Confetti in the air. Guests dancing long after sunset. Those are the moments that matter. And they're the reason we do what we do.
